P.E. & Sports Premium

The positive impact PE and sport has on our pupil’s physical, social and emotional wellbeing

At Wellington Eagles Primary Academy, we recognise the impact PE and sport has on our pupils physical, social and emotional wellbeing, and are pleased to participate in so much sport, both within curriculum time and also at extra-curricular events. Within the curriculum, children are given a minimum of 2 hours of quality PE teaching each week. In addition to this, many sports clubs across both Key Stages are offered, such as hockey, tag rugby, football, netball, climbing and dance, some of which are run by high quality professional practitioners and club leaders that visit our school. Some of the fantastic external links we have to support our physical activity engagement program include Chelsea Football, Dance Days and Rippa Rugby.

We continually invest in our PE department, regularly updating equipment as well as investing in a brand new, high quality PE planning scheme called The PE Hub. This has enabled staff to feel confident in their teaching and assessing of PE and Sports, whilst captivating pupils in exciting and engaging lessons in a variety of sports including football, hockey, tennis, athletics, gymnastics, tag rugby, badminton and more.

At Wellington Eagles our ethos for SPORT is:

Sociable Perseverance Opportunity
Resilience

eamwork

At Wellington Eagles Primary we believe in living active, healthy lifestyles have recently completed the Bronze Healthy Schools Award. In order to maximise our opportunities to be active throughout the day, we annually engage our Year 6 students in the local Playground Leaders scheme, who take on responsibilities such as looking after equipment, running activities on break times for the school.

Wellington Eagles maintain strong links with their Academy Secondary School; The Wellington Academy. We attend meetings every year to talk about what events in sport they can host such as our whole school sports day. It is a great opportunity for the children to connect with the secondary school and make use of their facilities. In addition to this, staff from Wellington Eagles have attended rock climbing training so that the Wellington Eagles pupils can utilise the new state of the art climbing wall in The Wellington Academies sport centre.

Our school believes in the values of community, and with this in mind, we participate in many sporting events with our local cluster of primary schools and other local community organisations including  football, tag rugby, swimming, netball, hockey, orienteering, badminton, dance and gymnastics tournaments. We also have strong links with our local sports and leisure centre, who teach groups of our children to swim in their pool each year.

At Wellington Eagles, when it comes to sports, we have big ambitions and hope to achieve many more successes in the future.

Evidencing the Impact on Primary Sports Premium Funding at The Wellington Lions Primary Academy

Wellington Eagles Primary Academy received £18,100 for the 2022/2023 academic year. The planned use of the PE and school sport funding at Wellington Eagles will be effective in improving and sustaining our high quality PE and sports provision. It will ensure that our children become physically literate and benefit from enriched sport, exercise and are active in keeping healthy.

The figures for last academic year (2022/2023) of Sports Premium Funding are as follows:

What is Sports Premium Funding?

The government has provided funding to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary schools to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Sports Premium Funding Objective:

The Primary PE and Sport Premium is ring-fenced and must only be spent on physical education and sport provision in schools.

The funding therefore aims to achieve a self-sustaining improvement in all areas of PE, from the quality of physical education to introducing health focused physical activities and after school sports.

As a result, it is expected that schools will see an improvement against the following 4 key indicators:

  1. All pupils being engaged in regular physical activity, and lead healthy active lifestyles.
  2. An increase in confidence, knowledge and skills of PE and sport teaching staff.
  3. A broader range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
  4. Greater participation of pupils in competitive sports
This great opportunity will allow schools to spend the sports funding on improving their provision of PE and sport as well as having the freedom to choose how they do this.

For Wellington Eagles Primary Academy, the increase of funding into primary PE and sport, and the opportunity to up skill and train all our teachers and other adults supporting learning is exciting! We utilise this funding to inspire all our children, regardless of ability, and provide a lasting and positive impact on PE and Sport within school and our community. We strongly believe in the benefits of high quality sport and PE provision on our children’s health, social and emotional wellbeing. We trust that the Sports Premium funding is helping us make a life changing impact to our pupils learning both in and beyond the school environment.
